We're not quite in the postelection era

Although we know the results of this week's presidential election, many local races across the country have yet to be called. For those who are covering the results, here are a few quick reminders:

  • Don't capitalize congressional, but you should capitalize congressional districts and use numerals: "She represents the 2nd Congressional District."
  • City council and city hall are capitalized if you're referring to a specific body or location: "The Los Angeles City Council passed the resolution." Use one word for councilmember.
  • Use a period when abbreviating ballot propositions: "Here's everything you need to know about Prop. 10."

If people are accusing your organization of bias, or if you're debunking misinformation, our free election guide is still available for download. It will help you:

  1. Responsibly report on conspiracy theories
  2. Ward off misinformation about the voting process
  3. Address accusations of bias
  4. Thoroughly label opinion content

And importantly, if you were in a newsroom this week, we hope you are able to get some rest this weekend. Thanks for all you do!

Any idea where we're going with this? 😉 You might have spotted three sneaky homophones in the sentences above: alter, stationery and hangar. Each has a...
