🔔 New resource alert

Trust in news is about on par with Americans' belief in election-related conspiracy theories.

Only 32% of Americans have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the news media, according to Gallup. Meanwhile, a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll found that 36% of Americans do not think President Joe Biden was legitimately elected, and 32% believe in one of the core principles of the "great replacement" conspiracy theory, according to a 2022 AP-NORC poll.

These reasons and more are why we've partnered with Modifier and Trusting News to expand the USC Annenberg Style Guide that powers Stylebot to include research-backed best practices for election coverage.

We've already shared some of these strategies in this newsletter, and now we have a new resource that covers them as well. You can download our free guide and get advice on:

  • When and how to report on conspiracy theories
  • Choosing the right words to help ward off misinformation about the voting process
  • How to address accusations of bias
  • Labeling opinion content

Qualifying newsrooms can also get access to Stylebot through Election Day via the Knight Election Hub.

With Indigenous Peoples' Day and Columbus Day coming up on Monday, we're resurfacing last year's newsletter about the holidays. Enjoy! Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the holiday a growing list of jurisdictions recognize in place of Columbus Day. Indigenous Peoples’ Day dates back to 1989, when South Dakota became the first state to replace Columbus Day with it. Use "advance voting" instead of "early voting" to refer to electoral processes that allow people to cast their votes before Election Day: "It was the first year of the state's new advance-voting process." Keep in mind that the popularity of mail-in voting
